Position Title: HSI Stem Instructor - Computer Information Systems (HSI STEM Grant)

Department: East Campus

Rate of Pay: Exempt - C41 (Range $51,318 - $62,526) at 40 hours/week

Position Summary:

We are seeking candidates who are passionate about supporting Hispanic, low-income, and female-identifying learners to enroll, persist and complete Computer Information Systems (CIS) programs of study at Pima Community College in the areas of Networking, System Administration, and Cybersecurity. The Center for Excellence in IT and Cybersecurity includes the Arizona Cyberwarfare Range, a cybersecurity operations center and a student managed data center. The selected candidate will be working with students in these instructional areas, therefore the successful candidate should have several years of experience in networking, system administration and/or cybersecurity.

This position is responsible for developing pedagogical approaches that support Hispanic and low-income learners while delivering instruction that supports the IT Meta-Major using a variety of methods, modalities and settings for the Title III HSI-STEM - IT Knowledge and Context Grant at the East Campus of Pima Community College. The purpose of the HSI-STEM - IT Knowledge and Context Grant is to increase the number of Hispanic and low-income students attaining degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); and to develop model transfer and articulation agreements between two-year HSIs and four-year institutions in such fields. The focus of this program is to attract more students and support them to persist and compete in the high demand field of IT/Cybersecurity. It also improves the capacity of our IT meta-major to meet the high demand of employers in our region for IT and cybersecurity professionals. The grant provides for innovations in technology, teaching strategies and student outreach. The Staff instructor will work closely with the Grant Program Manager, Academic Director and campus administration to meet the goals and objectives of the grant, and to meet the needs of students in the target areas and populations.

The work schedule for this position is flexible and may include working evenings and weekends.

Continued employment in the position is contingent upon continued funding through designated external sources. This grant is set to expire on 09/30/2026.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspire learners, particularly Hispanic and low income students, with inclusive pedagogical approaches and teaching strategies that help learners achieve academic success by delivering instruction in multiple modalities (including: face to face, hybrid, virtual, and online).

  • Collaborate with students in the production datacenter to maintain operations and architect new solutions

  • Interact with learners using culturally affirming approaches and applied-learning demonstrations with current, effective classroom management techniques; evaluate student performance while providing prompt feedback to support persistence and completion

  • Monitor and continuously improve instruction utilizing appropriate delivery methods, cultural awareness and formative assessment to ensure Student Learning Outcomes are met on a classroom, discipline/program, and college level and adjust teaching styles to meet the needs of a diverse student population, including: Hispanic and First Generation College Students. Deliver instruction to credit and non-credit students interested in personal and community learning opportunities

  • Prepare syllabi, instructional materials, lesson plans, classroom and laboratory presentations to assist students in achieving educational goals holistically supporting student wellness and academic success. Develop, research, review, evaluate and revise course outlines, course materials, and curriculum; select texts, equipment, and materials including evaluation of alternative delivery methods of instruction

  • Assess student needs and goals; determine student placement in programs; monitor home-study students; prepare progress reports; refer students for appropriate testing; provide academic advising and advocacy; meet with advisors to discuss student progress; and evaluate student progress for program continuation or completion

  • Maintain competency and currency in technologies supported by the IT Center of Excellence, both operation and curricular

  • Maintain competency and currency in teaching strategies, subject delivery modalities, and assessment methods

  • Provide counsel regarding student discipline issues to create positive outcomes. Work collaboratively with HSI STEM Student Success Navigators to help provide referrals for students to internal departments and external agencies and organizations to assist students in accessing additional support services to aid in success

  • Prepare official records, forms, data-tracking reports, attendance reports, and related documentation requirements. Read and respond to emails and other communications

  • Serve actively as a member of the department and discipline groups

  • Participate in fostering community partnerships that strengthen educational opportunities in response to industry and academic transfer needs

  • Represent the department and/or campus on college-wide committees

  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students and utilize a collegial style in all forms of communication

  • Work collaboratively with HSI STEM Outreach & Internship Coordinator to recruit potential new learners for educational programs; conduct orientation meetings for prospective and new students

  • Engage in professional learning activities to improve student outcomes. May represent the college at awards conferences, state committees, or work groups in support of the area of instruction

  • May serve as a programmatic lead to support staff (including but not limited to: HSI STEM Data Center Specialists, Tutors, Mentors) or program volunteers to include providing work direction in assigned instructional areas. May serve as a resource for staff instructors throughout the program in specialized areas of instruction

  • Performs other related duties as assigned


Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related area and

  • Two years of related instructing experience


or

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above


Preferred:

  • Master's degree in any discipline

  • Bi-lingual Fluency (writing and speaking) in English and Spanish


The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Teaching a broad range of Computer Information System courses with a focus on networking, system administration and cyber security. Deliver this teaching in occupational and academic settings

  • Ability to adapt and modify instruction based on the instructional needs of students, including working with accommodations and accessibility

  • Knowledge of appropriate and effective use of assessment information to improve instruction

  • Evaluation of students' educational progress: ability to maintain high instruction and learning standards and assess students' academic progress in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes

  • Teaching in traditional and non-traditional formats such as online and web-enhanced.

  • Preferred knowledge of curriculum development, course design, and implementation

  • Maintain knowledge of the resources available to students to assist them with academic and personal challenges, and ability to help students access those resources

  • Demonstrate competencies in multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusivity: knowledge of diverse community college student populations, and the ability to address diversity in effective instructional practice and student learning

  • Industry recognized certifications covering operating systems, networking, cybersecurity and/or programming

  • Operation datacenter experience

  • Experience with Windows and Linux operating systems

  • Experience programming in Python and other common languages

  • Experience in Continuous Integration and Development (CI/CD)

  • Experience with requirements gathering and systems design

  • Experience teaching developmental, occupational and academic courses

  • Experience with innovative teaching methodologies

  • Experience teaching online courses and/or alternative instructional formats

  • Experience using a Learning Management System, preferably D2L Brightspace

  • Instructional principles and strategies including instructional material evaluation and selection techniques

  • Curriculum development; implementation of course materials and lesson plans

  • Adult learning theory and principles and experience instructing adult learners

  • Non-traditional, student-centered approaches to instruction

  • Compliance with Arizona Educational Standards; State and National guidelines

  • Maintaining cohesive multi-level diverse groups

  • Adapting instruction to meet individual needs

  • Speaking in public

  • Adapting to a unique teaching environment

  • Working in a collaborative environment

  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers supervisors, and the general public
