DESCRIPTION: Humboldt State University and the Department of Geology invites applications for a full-time, tenure track assistant professor position starting August 2021, in the broad area of lithospheric earth processes (formation and evolution of the oceanic and/or continental lithosphere) with expertise in one or more of the following areas: earth materials, mineralogy, igneous or metamorphic petrology, and paleoseismology/seismology. Ideally, this candidate's teaching and research expertise would complement our existing strengths in geomorphology, tectonics, glacial geology, structural geology, geochronology, and critical-zone ecohydrology. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
An earned Ph.D. or equivalent (dissertation defended and accepted) in Geology/Geoscience with a specialization in igneous processes and petrology, metamorphic petrology, lithospheric processes, paleoseismology/seismology or a related field from an accredited college of university is required at the time of appointment. Outstanding candidates with ABD will be considered. If ABD at the time of interview, please include a statement from Ph.D. advisor regarding the likelihood of completion prior to appointment date (approximately August 15, 2021). Candidates with experience developing curriculum/courses/programs that inclusively serve a diverse student population and facilitate community growth are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
  • Interest and ability to teach a demanding course load and broad range of courses that includes General Geology, Geologic Field Methods, California Geology, and Summer Field Camp, and will include some combination of the following, based on the candidate's specialty and abilities: Earth Materials, Petrology, Neotectonics, Structural Geology, Advanced Field Methods and Instrumental Methods;
  • Record of, or demonstrated potential for, effective teaching or teaching experience using a variety of inclusive methodologies, and commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
  • Record of quantitative, field-based, and lab-based research of processes related to the formation and evolution of the oceanic and/or continental lithosphere ;
  • Record of, or potential for, involving undergraduate students in their research program including creating research opportunities for all students, preferably in the western US;
  • Interest and ability in teaching field-based courses, such as Field Methods or part of the four week summer Field Camp;
  • Willingness to actively recruit students from community colleges and local high schools;
  • Values that align with the mission, values and vision statement of the department, College of Natural Resources and
    Sciences and the university; and
  • Commitment to collegiality and collaboration for the benefit of the department anduniversity.
    Preferred qualifications for this position include:
  • Willingness to participate in the development of online learning experiences or ability to strengthen geospatial education (e.g. GIS) and training opportunities for students;
  • Desire to incorporate innovative teaching methods and develop educational earth science pedagogies and a commitment to community outreach; and
  • Potential for collaborative research with other faculty in the geology department or other departments.

    PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates are expected to be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. Instructional assignments may include: introductory and general education geology courses, required courses in field geology, Earth Materials, Petrology, Neotectonics, Structural Geology, and Instrumental Methods and at least one upper division/graduate level course in their specialty and summer field camp every two or three years.

    Successful applicants will be expected to advise research at the MS and undergraduate levels. The Geology Department is strongly field oriented, and the successful applicant should have demonstrated interest and ability to teach students in field situations. The normal teaching workload is approximately three courses per semester with associated laboratories. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.

    The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching; research and scholarship with graduate and undergraduate students, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions of the department, campus, and university system.

    GENERAL INFORMATION: The Department of Geology is currently composed of ~55 geology undergraduate students, ~7 geology graduate students, 6 faculty, and 2 full-time staff. We offer a BS degree in Geology, a BA in Geoscience, and a MS degree in Environmental Systems-Geology Option. Our location on California's beautiful North Coast near the Mendocino Triple Junction and proximity to a diverse suite of igneous and metamorphic assemblages, as well as structural features in the Coastal and Klamath geologic provinces, provide unparalleled access to natural laboratories.

    Humboldt State University sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi'ni (over in the woods).
