The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) invites applications for seven full-time Instructors of Science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) at its new campus in Morganton, North Carolina. This recruitment is for seven vacancies. Positions are 10-month, permanent-track positions with full benefits through the State of North Carolina.

Description of Duties:

The seven positions are full-time, ten-month appointments in the Department of Science at the NCSSM-Morganton campus, with full benefits through the state of North Carolina. The positions report to the Morganton Chair of Science and are responsible for providing instruction in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics.

General duties:

  • Develop and communicate to students clear course objectives and goals;

  • Plan and develop an instructional program that helps students assimilate specific course content and skills;

  • Hold tutorial sessions;

  • Regularly monitor and evaluate students' progress, providing them with resources and feedback on their performance;

  • Structure and manage an environment conducive to learning;

  • Model for students responsibility to self and others;

  • Follow the school's mission, policies, and procedures;

  • Teach January-Term courses;

  • Attend departmental, faculty, and staff meetings;

  • Serve on departmental, faculty, and school-wide standing committees;

  • Write recommendations for up to 15 students each year, as requested;

  • Participate in professional development and personal intellectual growth activities;

  • Participate in one or more of the following activities:

    • Provide information, service, and expertise to other schools and organizations;

    • Assist students on special projects, independent and individual study, and seminar-based studies;

    • Participate in the admissions process by recruiting, selecting, and advising prospective students;

    • Participate in NCSSM alumni activities;

    • Provide assistance for school-sponsored programs and extracurricular activities.




Specific duties:

Teach 3 class sections each semester and 4 weeks of a January Term course. Adopt core science courses from NCSSM Durham and develop new elective and interdisciplinary courses.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Experience teaching biology, chemistry, or physics and a commitment to engaging gifted and motivated students in face-to-face and online classrooms. Enthusiasm for student-centered, hands-on lab or field activities and familiarity with educational and laboratory technology. Interest in emphasizing quantitative or computational approaches to science content and incorporating the concepts and techniques of data science.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Master's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, other Natural Sciences or Science Education.

Final candidates are subject to criminal and sex offender background checks. Some vacancies also require a motor vehicle check. If the highest degree is from an institution outside of the U.S., final candidates are required to have their degree equivalency verified at www.wes.org or equivalent service.
