Job Description:
The Research Engineer and Lab Manager will provide high-level technical support including design, development, fabrication, utilization, and testing of specialized research equipment, environmental sensor packages, and prototype systems for research and development programs supported by the New York State Center of Excellence in Environment and Energy Systems (SyracueCoE) at Syracuse University. This position will oversee operations of experimental laboratories at the Syracuse CoE headquarters and associated faculty labs, as well as supervise and provide advice to graduate and undergraduate interns working at Syracuse COE, with regard to experimental set up and data acquisition. The Research Engineer and Lab Manager ensures quality, safety and timely repairs and upgrades of research equipment and facilities.

Qualifications:
  • Associates degree is required.
  • Bachelors degree in an Engineering field preferred.
  • Five (5+) plus years of experience working in an R&D lab with small-scale equipment design, testing, and operation.


Job Specific Qualifications:
  • Must be able to work independently on design, assembly, and evaluation of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Must have practical hands-on skills, be comfortable working in engineering research labs, and possess basic mechanical, electrical, and plumbing skills for R&D equipment and prototype systems.
  • Computer skills in CAD, National Instruments LabVIEW, MatLab, and any other engineering, design, testing, or analysis software are highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with laboratory tools and practices for mechanical assembly; test equipment assembly; sheet metal fabrication; data acquisition system and database design and development, assembly, programming, and repair; and laboratory research instrumentation.
  • Experience in academic research engineering laboratory is highly desired.
  • Experience in managing research labs and supervising/advising students in laboratory works is highly desired.


Responsibilities:
  • Develop and manage COE multi-scale testbeds for environmental and energy systems including the development or selection, testing, and calibrations of sensors, instrumentation, data acquisition, database development and maintenance, and documentation.
  • Manage the operation, maintenance, and use of the testbeds for academic and industrial research, product testing and demonstration.
  • Support faculty and industrial partners in proposals and projects that required COE testbeds.
  • Support faculty and students engaging in collaborations using testbeds to ensure successfully completed, on-time projects.
  • Supervise/advise CoE student interns participating in the projects.
  • Oversee the operation of COE research laboratories such as TIEQ lab, BEST lab, BEES Lab, South campus BESTlab, cold climate heat pump facility, COE multiscale environmental and energy monitoring stations, material characterization and others, including the maintenance, calibration, repair, and upgrade of equipment.
  • Work with the university facilities manager in building management issues related to research and development (R&D) equipment and tasks.
  • Supervise/advise CoE student interns on R&D projects and equipment maintenance.
  • Support faculty and students engaging in collaborations using COE research laboratories to ensure successful completion of projects on time.
  • Assist faculty and industrial partners in the use of COE research laboratories and serve as a liaison to the academic laboratories.
  • Assist researchers in specifying engineering equipment, selecting vendors, ordering research supplies and equipment, and maintaining inventories.
  • Be the CoE contact person on IT related issues interacting with ECS IT Group and SU ITS.
  • Ensure that safety standards and procedures in handling hazardous equipment and substances in research laboratories are followed, working in collaboration with other colleges and offices at Syracuse University, including Environmental Health and Safety Services, Campus Planning Design and Construction, and Risk Management.
  • Other duties as assigned
